5 ways to prevent sabotaging your own defense

Every state has different ways of dealing with those who drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. “DUI” refers to driving under the influence while “DWI” means you were driving while impaired. These actions come with serious consequences that can greatly affect your future if they are not handled correctly.

In Oklahoma, if your blood alcohol content is at 0.08 percent or higher and you are over 21, you could face jail time, fines and revocation or suspension of your license. If you are under 21 and have any alcohol in your system, you may lose your license for anywhere from 6-36 months. The important thing when you are arrested for DUI or DWI is to keep your criminal record clear. Here are five ways to do just that.

1. Do not drive if your license is suspended

If your license has been revoked or suspended for any reason, do not get behind the wheel of a car until it is reinstated using the appropriate steps with the DMV. Driving with a suspended license reflects badly on your case and can increase your penalties and fines.

2. Do not vent about your case on social media

Truth be told, no matter what your privacy settings are on your social media accounts, prosecutors may use information you posted against you in court. During your case, refrain from talking about your legal situation on Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram or any other social media platform. If you are in doubt, always play it safe and do not post information.

3. Do not miss your court dates

If you have a court date and you miss it, not only does it reflect badly on your character, it may also give the judge cause to issue a warrant for your arrest. This means you could end up sitting in jail while you wait for your trial.

4. Do not maintain the partying lifestyle

If you have been arrested for DUI or DWI, the best thing you can do is keep your record squeaky clean until your trial is over. If you are intoxicated in public or drinking regularly, the court may look at you differently. Until your case is completely settled, stay away from excessive drinking and partying.

5. Do not go it alone

Once you have been arrested for DUI or DWI, you want to keep your record clear so there is no long-term damage that affects your ability to get a loan or a job in the future. A criminal record can have far-reaching effects, and we encourage you to hire an attorney to represent you if you want to keep your record clean.
